Kang Sae-byeok was born in a small, tired village in the rural Musan County of North Hamgyong Province, North Korea. At 17, she overhears her parents planning to escape— to run north, to cross the Tumen river and flee far from the neglected province and the terrors of the country itself. Sae-byeok doesn’t butt-in at first, watching her parents carefully from a distance as she does her chores in the river and daily routine with her younger brother, Cheol.

All she could think about was ji yeong ways of being unfazed. They were in a life or death game and ji yeong would joke around. Even as she was gonna die she still was unfazed. She had nothing ahead of her. Could sae byeok get out and go to jeju island. Maybe in another life.

"Please don't do this, please." Saebyeok's voice quaked, using all her strength to escape the masked man's grasp, but it was to no avail. Her gaze remained Jiyeong meters away from her. She was so close, she could run to her now, but she was being restrained from doing so. She cursed underneath heavy breaths, struggling to maintain composure. Not when she could lose her. Not like this. "Let us go, take anything. Anything!" Her tone rasped as panic rose, her heart racing when they approached Jiyeong. She was stumbling around in pain, small steps being taken towards Saebyeok. She was exerting all the effort she could just to get to her, but it wasn't working. They've fucked her up.
Jiyeong-despite Saebyeok's desperate cries, despite the brute force shoving her down to her knees on the concrete ground, despite the muzzle of a pistol being pressed to the side of her head-smiles. "It's gonna be okay."
"Let her go! Cut the bullshit now and let her go!" Her voice strained, kicking her feet back at the man seizing her. He grunts in pain, and she finally manages to yank one of her hands away from her oppressor.
Jiyeong's eyes widened, pushing herself off of her knees and darting towards her. "Saebyeok!"
