The weather outside the window held her hostage; each burst of bright white light pulled her back to times she believed were better left forgotten. Times she had already tried to bury deep within the recesses of her mind.

Summary
“It’s a bittersweet feeling; watching someone you love thrive in their element, but for a cause that just makes you hurt.
Today marked six years since the death of their mother, and Katara, ever considerate of the feelings of the people she loves, made Kya’s favorite dish so that what’s left their small family could have something to honor her with in their grief.”
or:
Where Sokka learns what it means to grieve differently than the people he’s surrounded by, and how, even in death, a person can fundamentally affect the people they loved.
(a sokka & katara-centric oneshot)

Summary
They all look a bit weary, a bit rough around the edges, a bit scared. But every single one of them has a look of determination on their faces, of the grim resolve that they will see this through to the end, no matter the cost. They will either emerge victorious or die fighting.
Anything less would not be fair to the world.
(Then again, why is it on them to save the world from tyranny? On a group of teenagers and barely adults? That isn't fair.
But the world has never cared about fairness. At least not in the last century, and fuck it, someone needed to make a stand rather sooner than later.)
—
Another smile. Another kiss. And as she lays there, wrapped up in Zuko's warmth, Katara remembers a saying: love is brightest in the dark. And here is the thing - times are dark; they are living through darkness. But she has found her light, and she will not let it go if it's the last thing she does.
—
or: the Water Tribes are hell-bent on revenge. Sokka flees with the Avatar in tow, committing treason. Katara, tasked with hunting her brother down, stands between her tribe and her family.

Summary
It's simple, really.
She's always hated him. More than anyone else in the world. She wants him out of their way, out of their lives.
So when he doesn't come back from the Boiling Rock, she's glad.
(Right?)
But then Aang and Toph decide they're going back to get him, and she can't let the Avatar set foot in the most secure prison in the Fire Nation—the world, probably—mere weeks before the comet. The fate of the world lies in his hands. No matter what, he can't get captured.
So she goes instead.
(It's not so simple after that.)

Summary
Team Avatar gets captured, and it is not the end of the world but it is still an experience unpleasant and unkind. Katara grits her teeth and she does not grin but she does bear it.
“Life isn’t fair, Katara,” Sokka had told her once, eyes hard and knowing and caring and real, and she had tasted a challenge on her tongue and decided you couldn't know unless you tried.
Because listen, listen, her kindness is not in her predisposition, it is an effort and a battle all to its own, and she will fight for her right to live in a world of her own making with her every breath. Her core is made of ice as hard as steel. She is not a blessing- she is a warrior, and if you think she will stand to be knocked down or belittled or broken you have never been more wrong.
Life has never been fair but Katara will never stop trying to make it so. This is not soft or naive or an illusion of bravery, this is a strength, and it is hers, it is hers, it is hers.
(Team Avatar gets captured, and they escape, and they live. This is how it happens.)
