Rain tapped against the window when Nayuki opened his eyes. His head throbbed in time with it, every beat blurring into a dull ache that struck him right at his temples.
His body felt…heavy, having been assaulted with the kind of exhaustion that didn’t come from lack of sleep but from…something burning low and feverish beneath his skin. The ache in his joints, the heat in his cheeks, the faint tremor in his hands—it all added up to one conclusion he couldn’t deny.
He was sick. Somehow, despite his usual caution, he’d caught a cold.
And Raito doesn’t know what to do about it.

The world was aflame, the palace collapsing behind them, but all Raito could see was Nayuki—his shoulders shaking, arms clinging to him as if they were still children in the nursery, terrified of thunder and fate.
Their robes matched, though Nayuki’s was scorched at the edges. A tear at the collar revealed the scar Raito remembered bearing first, and…their crowns were gone. Their kingdom was gone.
Only Nayuki remained.
After collapsing from exhaustion, Raito dreams of lifetimes where he dies in place of Nayuki again and again. But thankfully, this is all just a dream…right?
