Summary
The appearance of strangers feels so cataclysmic that at first you think it must be a dream or a vision. And then one of them yells and falls forwards. Your memories get jumbled after that. Lottie standing over him with an axe, her face striped with blood. A choked laugh. Nat’s scream. Something whistles past your face and behind you someone cries out in pain. The others start running and you run with them, tearing off your cloak, the night air singing past your ears. The hunt comes as a relief, a return to something you can understand.
That’s the first time you see Kodiak: a dark figure blurred by firelight, a shadow flashing through the trees.

Melissa learns that survival isn't just about food and fire - it's about power. As the Yellowjackets fracture under desperation, Melissa carves a space beside the girl who was never meant to lead but does nonetheless, both ruthlessly and instinctively. That space, however, was once already taken and she is now simply filling in for what once was. Who once was.

Summary
You sing and the Wilderness sings back. It’s like the sound rises up from the ground and through you, borrowing your voice to make audible what has always been there. You feel the note vibrating through you, filling you until you feel your edges blurring. Bitterness lingers on your tongue from the tea Lottie gave you. Everything feels heightened: colours are brighter, the dark is darker, the world shimmers like a mirage. You’re no longer a girl: you’re a creature of sound and darkness. The firelight, the trees, the ground beneath your toes all feel as much a part of you as your physical body. You feel a surge of euphoria so strong it lifts you out of yourself. You can feel the Wilderness take notice of you: it’s like a quiet place opens inside your mind, a listening presence inviting you to speak into it. You focus your whole being into one word. Rescue.
Kodiak appears suddenly and silently, like a vision. You stop mid-spin, staggered by your own momentum, a wordless song dying in your throat. He’s limned in firelight, the one bright thing in the darkness, as though he’s the only thing that’s real. Your world sharpens to a pinpoint. He’s here for you: the answer to your prayer.
