Summary
The great and terrible catch of joining the Society of Shadows - the paragraph that makes you hesitate, pen in hand, over the dotted line of your contract - is this: you leave behind the world as you know it, and it, in turn, ceases to know you. Your loved ones forget you; you're supposed to forget them.
Riz remembers anyway.
(Or: several years after the Bad Kids fall to pieces midway through their Junior Year, an agent of the shadows keeps tabs on them in the prelude to Solstice.)

Summary
Fig Faeth is twenty six years old when she wakes up in a Las Vegas hotel with a ring on her finger.
To her credit, the first thing she notices isn’t the ring. As her face ID unlocks her phone, Fig frowns as she scrolls through her notifications. She’s got over a hundred messages in their Bad Kidz group chat, half a dozen messages from her mom, as well as a few missed calls from Lola, followed by a bunch of texts demanding Fig call her in all caps.
A message from Sam Nightingale: totally called this btw congrats
Jawbone O'Shaughnessy: congrats kiddo, but maybe give your mom a call? <3
Gilear Faeth: f1gUer0th mY d4ugh+errr> tH1s ph0nE is 3r0ken Aga1nrn. pl#s cA11 mEh
Fabian Seacaster: dude wtffff i thought i called dibs on best man???? Or at LEAST ring bearer u owe meeee
Lola’s name pops up on her screen- calling again.
“Hey-” Fig says quietly, accepting the call and trying not to wake up Gorgug, still slumped against her shoulder.
“You got married?” Lola yells as soon as Fig picks up.
"What?"

Summary
Gorgug blinked as Fig burst into laughter—low at first, bubbling thickly in her throat, then growing to a full cackle, staccato shaking in her shoulders as she buried her face into Gorgug’s chest. “We’re not dating,” she said.
Lola looked at them, raised her eyebrows. “You’re not dating.”
“We’re not dating.” Gorgug confirmed. His lips cracked into a smile, a curious thing.
Apparently, they weren’t dating.
(or: five times lola thought her clients were together, and the one time they actually were.)

Summary
“Good morning,” he said, turning towards the bed. “I made-” Gorgug froze, voice dying in the middle of his sentence. His eyes caught on the quilt and sheets thrown halfway across the room.
The bed- the room- was empty.
Fig’s clothes were gone from the floor. The pillow was mussed where she’d been asleep, but it had long since gone cold when Gorgug grabbed at it with shaking hands. She was gone.
Fig was gone.
Gorgug wasn’t the smartest tool in the box, or whatever, but he wasn’t a total idiot. He’d been friends with Fig for years, he knew how she liked to get her kisses in, how she tended to run when things got too vulnerable, how she’d only had a few partners her whole life that’d lasted longer than a month. Realistically, Gorgug knew he shouldn’t be surprised that Fig ran.
He just guessed he (foolishly, stupidly) hoped that he would be different than all the others. Hoped that Fig knew him well enough not to steal his heart and run away.

Summary
“Right, yeah totally, I just wanted to say, about last night…” Gorgug opened his mouth, and then closed it slowly, hesitating. Fig knew what he was going to say. Could see him wavering and trying to figure out the right way to phrase it. She knew Gorgug wanted to ruin their friendship as little as she did, and he was doing damage control as best as he could. So Fig did them both a favor, and said what she knew Gorgug was thinking.
“It was just a one-time thing, right?” Fig hated the words even as they fell out of her mouth, landing in a damning pile at their feet. It was selfish and untrue, but what was Fig Faeth if not a self-centered liar? That, and she didn’t think she could stomach hearing Gorgug say it aloud; even if his actions made it painfully clear he didn’t want anything else from her but what they’d always been. “We can just- go back to normal. I don’t want to lose your friendship, you know?”
Gorgug’s face shuttered, going flat and placid between one heartbeat and the next. “Oh,” he breathed, in what Fig was sure was relief, “yeah, right. Sure, if that’s what you want.”

Summary
Gorgug smiles at her, when she glances at him after they finish their last song. Nods at her, even though she didn’t say anything. The crowd screams, like it has the last three nights, for an encore.
Fig’s fingers tremble a little bit as she fixes her grip on her bass, fighting to keep her expression cool and confident and composed- the Fig the audience wants to see, not the Fig crawling under her skin. She looks back at Gorgug again, still sitting at his drum set with his drumsticks in hand, waiting for her direction. A little to his left, she can see Lola sticking her head out from between the wings, thumbs up and nodding for them to encore, even twice if the audience seems up for it. But Gorgug tilts his head, watching her and waiting.
And Fig shakes her head, hoping that Gorgug will know what she means, even if she doesn’t know fully.
She just knows that she feels like she’s going to vibrate out of her skin, and not in the fun electric way. The world is going blurry at the edges and she feels like she’s inches from fully stepping out of her body and watching it move and dance around from afar.

Summary
“This tour’s weird,” Gorgug says as she starts tuning her bass. “Not, like, in a bad way. It’s just weird.”
“You’re telling me,” Fig mumbles. “I thought we’d be, like, hanging out on a real boat.”
(Seven stops on Fig and the Sig Figs' second tour.)

Summary
It took her only a moment to realize that this wasn’t her girlfriend playing music. Instead, this was Ayda singing and using some sort of magic, probably Prestidigitation, to make the instrumental melody. Her first thought was that her girlfriend’s voice was easily the most beautiful thing she’d ever heard, and she wondered why she’d never heard her sing before. The second was that Ayda must have committed the tune of the song to memory in order to replay it so perfectly. That took levels of dedication and magical prowess that Fig didn’t think was possible.
Ayda Aguefort was constantly full of surprises, and Fig loved it with all her heart.
