And Lily Potter stepped aside.
Voldemort stared at her.
“... Is this some sort of trick?” he asked softly.

Voldemort’s lip curled - not in amusement, but disgust. His own mother had died for him. Pathetic, yes, sentimental and foolish - but she had chosen to die so that he could live. And why bother with jealous Ron, all that matters is to keep Harry alive?
Or: Hermione makes a plan to keep Harry alive during the Tournament, and if they discover some of Dumbledore's negligent oversights in the process...doesn't hurt to correct things, does it?
