They laugh, helpless in their affection. “Honestly Wines, you're so needy for someone who's lived so long.”
It pouts, utterly unconcerned with dignity. “Say it back.”
They lean in and press a kiss to its face, enjoying the tickle of fur. “I love you too.”
It’s nice. It’s lovely. It’s simple and sensible and they have been engaged before, they know this phase, and so they do not think anything of it.
What a poor scholar they make, sometimes.

“According to Spices and Apples, I’m in heat.” Someday, they will be ashamed of how long it took them to put those pieces together. Normally they would’ve solved it from Spices’ first objections. As it is, they barely manage to get the words out, mind half-blank with how good Wines smells.
It looks shocked, which isn’t exactly reassuring. “Ah. We did not realize that was coming so soon.” It shifts, awkwardness tangible and utterly unhelpful. “We would of course be more than pleased to share—”
“I should hope so!” They cry, shoving their face into its fur. This is what they’ve been needing. It hasn’t even been that long since they last saw it, but this, Wines, their lover, this is what they need. They need its scent surrounding them and its touch all across their body. They need its words in their ears, its tongue down their throat, and beneath the feverish agitation, its heart beating in time with their own.

Summary
“Our body is not suitable for carrying young.” It examines the fine embroidery of a burgundy corset with a light tone, as if discussing something of no real importance. “A side effect of being thrust into this form quite suddenly and with little concern for our future prospects, we imagine. One of several such effects.”
Living beings are meant to grow into maturity, not have it forced all at once. Even Cards is going into this a step (or an entire staircase, depending on who is running the show during their monthly treatment) at a time.
But whatever cast Wines down from king to beggar didn’t care about that.
