Summary
Thomas hadn't considered himself to be traditionally smart. At least not now, not after the maze. He'd describe himself as more... decisive, with a dash of rashness. That trait worked in the past, and he’d make it work now. But the Scorch makes things a little different.
Newt considered himself to be level-headed. After all, he was second-in-command. His level of calmness got absorbed directly into those around him, and he could never let them see him break. But the Scorch makes things a little different.
Thomas's world is flipped once again, at the hands of Teresa, when she tells him two devastating pieces of information. One of which concerns his beloved boyfriend.

Thomas always noticed how Newt pressed his lips together, jaw locked, everytime he and Thomas shared silent glances.
Thomas noticed how his own stomach clenched everytime that happened. How he wished Newt was closer.
How he started to wonder how many freckles Newt had now. Maybe if he got close enough, he would be able to count them.
That thought was never able to grow just enough. And Thomas was always the one to look away first.

Summary
It had seemed that all feelings of hope and motivation had been replaced with ones of doubt and worry. Perhaps Newt couldn't quite live with that - a daunting situation where he aimed for an escape yet didn't want to damage anyone, though it was apparent that he'd only end up being able to pick one.
But after his choice goes a little wrong, his friends are still there to pick him back up and aid his recovery, despite there still being a lack of hope. This problem, however, ends up getting solved later; the solution being in the form of a new Greenie: Thomas.
