Their socks and the skirts of their chimas were splattered with mud, water dripped into their faces and from the ends of their braids, and still Ok-nam heard and felt the thunderous booms, louder than any storm could ever hope to be, surround them like a smothering wave, like drowning in an ocean of sound. Her heart stuttered and raced with each shock wave. Jo Samshik, unfortunately, happens to be incurably obsessed with The King: Eternal Monarch. Does he like it? That’s up for debate. Does he love it? Undoubtedly. Does it have flaws? Of course, but how else would he be able to write rambling tumblr posts at 3am about every way it could have been better?
The character he feels most sorry for is Jo Yeong, so when his untimely death leads him to being reborn into Jo Yeong’s body, Samshik is horrified - and terrified of what might become of him when he eventually winds up back in Cheonjongo in 1994. There’s only one thing for it, so Lee Gon can be persuaded to prioritise saving his best friend above all else:

He felt no such relief about it but as long as Yeong stood behind him, within an arm’s reach, he would get through it again. And now that he thought about it, the flames were beautiful in the way they slithered around the dry wood and crackled loudly in all the colors of the brightest of sunsets. Another winter had begun.
He turned around and faced the staff. They clapped, as did the crowds of people gathered outside the palace, all having been waiting for the fire to be lit. Bonfires would be burning all across their peninsula that evening and night. Wearing the Consort’s Gwanbok, Yeong had been watching the fire too, the smoke rising above, but he lowered his eyes and met his. The golden details of the robe glimmered in the flickering light emanating from the bright flames. The boy from the harbor adorned in regal glory and wearing it like it had always been his. Gon smiled before he realized what he was doing.

He heard the melody but wasn’t able to make sense of the lyrics. He almost turned to ask someone, anyone, what it was about because it wasn’t part of the ceremony, but then, at last, the gate was opened again and he found that removing his eyes from it was suddenly impossible. Yeong sat straighter, heart beating very conspicuously but feeling so much lighter than just seconds ago.
