"Tav has apparently heard of this Blade of Frontiers folk hero nonsense, and insisted that they all help Wyll look for his quarry, an advocatus diaboli. Tav got into another fight to the death with two cultists, used magic to talk to an owlbear and a dog, and then insisted that they push forward to cross a river before dark instead of going back to the nice walled-in druids' Grove. In goblin territory, of course. And then, as soon as they found the advocatus diaboli, Tav changed their mind and decided that Wyll shouldn't kill her and that instead they should all be friends.
"And then smiled and introduced themselves as John Backpack. While looking at Karlach's backpack. In the secret language thieves use to convey to each other, 'Hey, I'm a thief.'

Summary
One hundred and fifteen years after the Absolute Crisis and a century after Tav's death, Estavir, a young elven ranger wanders the Sword Coast. Ever since he was very small, he's been tormented by visions of a past life and a red eyed phantom that dominates memories that aren't his. For decades, he's wandered the wilds of Faerûn in search of answers and respite.
When Estavir meets a vampire spawn who is threatening and flirtatious, he recognizes that crimson gaze immediately. Astarion is drawn to him as well, though he doesn't understand why. But the rogue still grieves for his dead lover and has his own issues to sort out.
The settlement of vampire spawn where Astarion had made his home has become the hunting ground for a killer, and he has been tasked with fetching Halsin to help find the person responsible. Estavir travels with them and finds secrets, blood, and an attraction that may blossom into something that finally brings both him and Astarion the peace they haven't known in decades.

But while Wyll has had a lot of practice clinging to hope with bloody hands, Taavi let go a long time ago. Allowing them into his heart could be a chance to finally rewrite each of their doomed narratives or it could mean both of their destruction.
