a novelization of the game Library of Ruina, made by Project Moon. Support Project Moon and their works, they're a great company. This fic will follow the main plot of the game, but I will also add in my own twists as well as story mods.

The City is the same as usual. People die left and right, evil is justified and rewarded while justice is ignored and suppressed, tragedies are repeated with different variations. The only thing different are these monsters called distortions appearing randomly, but all they do is merely add to the long list of cruelty to the City. However, all things must change in the end, nothing can remain the same forever.
That change begins with a man and a machine. Both searching for their salvation, not realizing it is with the other. The path the two walk is not easy and full of twists and turns, so keep your eyes buttered till the end~

"He deserved it."
Olivier—that paragon of rationality, his best friend and colleague of over five years—responds only by scoffing. Disgusted, almost. So what was the point in dignifying his presence? Strangely, it fills Roland with something more than relief. Relief. Why does that seem like the wrong word for it, even as it edges along his thoughts?
He should be happy he's alive, no? Should be grateful for the privilege. The opportunity to breathe, to carry on—for the possibility of surviving what comes next. Though the only thing Roland can think of is how Olivier's grip still threatens to cut off his breathing. To constrict his trachea and choke off the flow of air into his lungs. But that blooming of warmth that spreads through his core is more than mere biological function, and he knows it.
This rising heat feels less like relief and more like—
"You idiot."
Arousal. That's why those eyes make him feel warm. Like being set on fire from the inside out—that's what being at the receiving end of Olivier's glare. The eyes that cut into his skin with all the ease of a scalpel's precision.
Roland receives a scolding for a mistake.

Such is the life in The City. Leaving nothing but a wake of corpses and tragedies, a man too ashamed to recognize himself to be alive joins an Office.
Such is the conscience of those he now stands side by side. For what are humans without violence, murder, apathy, laughter, happiness, grief, and so on? Each and every one of them are human. So is he. All twelve of them were not exempt from the flow of The City—no one was.
Roland's had enough of brooding and reminiscing things he should just ignore. He's got work to be done. After all, Charles' Office has a reputation to uphold ... He in particular doesn't want to get fired.
