The Brotherhood are more coworkers than friends, and the popularity he once held in high school came from one-sided friendships and manipulation. Relationships are like business transactions, and he only gets involved if there's something in it for him.
But then Kurt had come along, and now things are...different.

Peter was not exactly having a good time, but for once he had done nothing to justify the intense and acute focus of Erik's gaze. His father.
It was a bit unsettling to be the person he looked at whenever they were in the same place together. When he had wanted to form a relationship with him in the hope of getting to know him better and maybe one day talking to him about the detail of their blood relation, he had not imagined it would turn out like this.
What could be going on in that radical extremist's head? Did he intend to kill Peter because he had annoyed him for some reason? He did not know okay, he just had a feeling it was the sort of thing he might do, after all he had admitted to killing people all his youth in a savage hunt for hidden Nazis and was quite clearly prepared to do it again if he had to defend himself or mutants so... yeah, it was time to run and keep a low profile. And to remove every bit of metal from his clothes. Just in case.
No, he was not being paranoid, just cautious.
