Aether agreed, he placed his hand on mine, giving it a little squeeze. His hand was calloused but warm without his gloves, it was reassuring and grounding when he held my hand like that. Still, as nice as it was, it felt a little embarrassing. This poor guy was stuck in this world, searching for his missing sister, and now he had to deal with me tagging along.

Excitement pumps through Childe’s veins as the words are uttered, his casual smile widening into an ecstatic grin. For it to be the Tsaritsa passing this mission along to him directly rather than Pierro– it must be high-stakes.
“You will be going to Liyue,” she says, “to enter a courtship with Rex Lapis.”

Childe swallows harshly, his tongue feeling thick in his mouth.
“Your Majesty, I believe there may be a misunderstanding.”
More like an impossibly large oversight to this whole plan. “Rex Lapis and I… we are not on the best of terms, at the moment.” That’s putting it lightly, though saying as much to his Queen feels immensely childish, and shame surely paints his face a burning red hue. “I do not think he would be pleased to receive me.”
Her expression does not change, and she only answers him with patience. “On the contrary, he has specifically requested you.”

A strange virus sweeps across Liyue, one which targets the Adepti and slowly reduces them to their original, unenlightened forms. Even Zhongli himself, despite having set aside his divinity in name, is not spared. Their consciousness suppressed, he and his former companions become the subjects of a Fatui Harbinger's heretical experiments. Though Zhongli himself is ultimately able to suppress the virus, leading to the possibility of a cure, there is no guarantee that the Doctor would have any desire to cure them in the first place-- after all, even if he doesn't continue the experiment, he happens to have an associate who would be rather pleased to receive an exotic beast as a gift.

Zhongli remembered every moment of his life. He would for the rest of time, a blessing and a curse. He remembered the moment he met a mysterious young man on the docks of Liyue harbor, spilling sweet words like tea, purchasing precious artifacts for him and then flitting out of his life. He remembered when he found out that young man was Tartaglia, Eleventh of the Fatui Harbingers.
He remembered when he broke Childe's heart.
So when a near death Childe stumbles his way through the streets of Liyue, Zhongli does the only thing he can think to atone for his mistakes.
Childe manages to escape the Abyss for a second time, finding himself on the streets of a city he longed for almost as much as home. He can feel the life escaping him and he knows his mind has been failing him. His memories are broken and scattered, the only thing clear that all he needs to move forward is the pain in his heart and the rage that comes from it.
Still as he feels life escaping him, he sees memories of a god that betrayed him. A god he would give anything to see one last time, to drink wine with, to hold once more.
And then he wakes up, light and free of the Abyss.
