After the madness went down in Nevada, there were no signs of animals to be seen, so getting your hands on actual animal meat was a luxury. Not that anybody would question this mystery too much.
In the end, no animals were ever seen in Nevada for multiple years, and the people accepted that things would never go back to normal, but just when Hank thought he wasn't seeing right, they were proven wrong by shining vertical pupils. -
