“Why do you care that I have clove oil?” Kazuma’s tone is soft, the way one would speak to a skittish deer, so careful. It isn’t an accusation, it’s a realization, voiced aloud, awaiting confirmation.
Ryu lifts her head, using her last bit of bravery to meet her friend’s gaze. It feels like the time stretches into hours as they look, really look, at each other. Cataloguing what time has done to both of them. They are still grasping each other, Ryu sitting on her folded right leg with the other leg hanging off the side of the chaise, her back is to the bolster and rolled arm of the chair, and Kazuma is on bent knees, flush with her friend’s thighs. She makes note of the calluses on the pads of Kazuma’s fingers, feeling a slight scrape as she traces comforting, slow circles into Ryu’s forearms. The high points of her face are tanner than the rest, lingering evidence of her labor at sea. And now she knows that she isn’t alone feeling the sting of changes made in the other’s absence.

As it would turn out, Kazuma might have damaged Barok’s trust in him a bit more than either of them thought by trying to get him a guilty verdict, triggering a vampire defense mechanism that most vampires don’t even seem to be aware of.

It was a strange request, but Lord Van Zieks hadn’t hit off far from the mark. After all, wasn’t reminiscing exactly what he was doing on his own before the prosecutor interrupted him? And if it could help him learn more about the man he had faced five times in court, he wasn’t going to argue.
Or Van Zieks invites himself to Sholmes' house to talk to Ryunosuke and the conversation quickly becomes personal. Add wine to the mix and feelings are quick to come to the surface.
