Anakin/padme soulmates that feel each other’s pain and die together cause Anakin to not join the war effort
[There are so many of Anakin's issues with the Jedi Order that I can't write here because he doesn't know how to articulate most of his grievances for me to write down. That being said, I will clarify that I based Mace's characterization off of this Tumblr post by husborth in that he's the logistics guy and isn't looking forward to the war at all, but Anakin's also a walking shatterpoint and this decision that he makes is also one unto itself, so headaches all around. Someone get this man some paracetamol.
Anakin's contentious relationship with the Force is inspired by that one passage from Rogue Planet, but it's a soft headcanon of mine that he can't "release his emotions into the Force" because they just roll back on him like a tsunami at some point.
I left the details of what happened on Tatooine during AOTC deliberately ambiguous, so feel free to interpret it however you want, including whether Shmi survives. Whether you want to see it as mostly canon-compliant up until the events of this fic or a fix-it AU where she survives, it's up to you to decide.
Following the events of this fic, at least in my heart, since Anakin is no longer a Jedi, Palpatine can't keep making demands for them to meet because he's a private citizen now — no longer a Jedi and thus no longer beholden to the Supreme Chancellor or the Senate. The mouse droids definitely spread the word about Anakin leaving; whether this leads to more Jedi leaving or even a Jedi schism, who knows. Padmé probably resigns from the Senate at some point and the Republic probably still falls, but Palpatine isn't having his chosen apprentice-victim anytime soon (preferably, never). There's also definitely a confrontation with Obi-Wan at some point because Anakin left without telling him first, but that's not my story to tell anymore.
