Summary
Barbara Boxer was a little woman, smaller than Rosemary, but with distinct knack for never being overlooked, despite her size.
She’d raised Rosemary all on her own like it was the easiest thing in the world, taking her hither and yon and imbuing her child with both the urge to wander and a fierce loathing of being tied down that had yet to be fully quelled.
Even once Rosemary had been working at the university for decades and had come to love her work with a passion, god, she’d had to get away nearly every weekend. Taken all her holidays, her sick leave, sometimes she’d scoop up her mother and they’d fly to Morocco, or Spain, and that would take the edge off for a few weeks.
No longer. Now, her mother was getting too old, and Rosemary had Laura. It was odd, somehow. She adored traveling with Laura, but at the same time, when she was with Laura, she really didn’t need to. It was like that urge, the urge to be somewhere else, to explore, to be out there doing something, it was like that was already being sated, somehow, by Laura.

Something clunked as she did so. Odd. Rosemary stuck her hand back in the drawer and felt around until her fingers closed on something small and square. She pulled it out, and even before she saw it, her brain said ring box.
And it really was a ring box. Small and blue, and square. Rosemary shook it. It rattled. Definitely a ring. Why on earth did Laura have a ring? Was it hers from Nick? But no, she'd given that back. Nick's grandmother's or something. Pig.
But then, whose was it? And why was it hidden away in Laura's sock drawer?

Rosemary should have been prepared. She should have known something like this would happen. Given the amount of police officers she and Laura came into contact with on a regular basis, it was only a matter of time before their luck would run out and they would see him. And they did, see him.
OR
Somebody gets murdered and the detective leading the investigation is Laura's ex husband, Nick. And the other detective is one Dan Scott from Midsomer Murders. But he’s not there much.
Edit: Dan Scott is not there and I really thought he would be, so so sorry Midsomer Murder people who's tag I blatantly abused. They do talk about him quite a bit though, if that helps.

Now they couldn't strategically brush their arms together as they gazed longingly into each others' eyes. That was how it always went in the films. You never knew. Was the hallway a little slim for three people walking side by side, and did Rosemary keep gently bumping into her because of it? Possibly. Laura didn't let that stop her.
