Li Tianchen doesn’t precisely trust Liu Xiao, in the sense that—regardless of how easily Liu Xiao smiles and claims to be trustworthy; regardless of the confident way he offers his hand out and echoes back the memory of a boy striding into a fountain—he doesn’t think anyone can. There’s something that relaxes in him anyway to have Liu Xiao besides him on the guestbed with his legs folded up and a book open on his lap, presence solid: a stage past the instinctive desire to hide.
