They stood there in silence for a moment before Racer X looked back at the car.
“So, do you need a hand?” he questioned.
“What, are you a mechanic now too?” The smile stayed on his face as he moved back towards the car.
Racer X followed as Speed motioned him over, “I know a thing or two,” he said. A small smirk on his face, like he was sharing a joke with himself.
“What are you working on?”
“I was just going over the rear suspension,” Speed said as he crouched down beside the car. “Care to take a look?” X grinned at him as he climbed under the car.

“Moving up,” he said.
Speed saw in his side mirror as X pulled out of line and shifted the Shooting Star to accelerate and passed Taejo. As he passed the Mach 5, Speed couldn’t help but look over at him.
The way Racer X drove was smooth and aggressive, and so achingly familiar to the driver Speed had spent his whole life idolizing.
Why do you drive like Rex? He wondered.
Speed eased up and X took his position in the front.

The duffle bag over his shoulder, though not particularly heavy, weighed on him with the promise of an uncertain future—what he hoped would be the start of a better, far brighter life than the one he had led until now.
This is a retelling of the original Next Generation Cartoon. It's my version of what could have been, if the project had been given time to develop and its screenwriters time to properly flesh out its characters, so though it takes inspiration from the cartoon, I'm giving it a more mature twist!
