Baxter Ward had a system. He kept his most cherished, nauseatingly sentimental memories as trinkets in a dusty attic in his head. They were fragile and delicate, like antiques from his hometown. With boxes and boxes of these trinkets, he could stave off his loneliness when melancholy struck from time to time, and go about the rest of his day like normal. He could compartmentalize and never have to be hit with all that sentimentality in his every day life. This was his attempt at behaving as a well-adjusted adult. He had a system.
When Baxter walked into his office to find Poppy Jennings sitting on his purple couch, his system turned into a disorganized, chaotic mess.
