Arden wakes up in a different world, determined to do something positive in what appears to be some kind of coma dream or hallucination. Maybe she'd help people dig wells, or plant crops or something until her synapses stop firing and she dies, or she wakes up.
She instead finds a bald elf in bad shape about to get taken out by wolves. Some stabbing and yelling later, she decides this is her good deed: Getting this dumbass in better shape so he can do whatever the hell he seems so dead-set on doing.

Max Trevelyan has been a powerless Circle mage most of his life. He didn't even get to fight in the Mage-Templar War when he wanted to. Now suddenly he is the Herald of Andraste and then the Inquisitor. With an ancient menace at large, Orlais in disarray, and the Chantry leaderless and still sundered from a terrible war and second schism, someone needs to pick up the pieces. And with a lover by his side who knows politics, the son of a magister, Max thinks he may have a real chance to make Thedas closer to his ideals.
Many of his companions want to rebuild the old world instead, but they may find that a challenge. Viscountess Hawke of Kirkwall and her mage army are issuing ultimatums about mage rights, and all Thedas knows they have the magic and weapons to back them up. Ferelden is also ascendant and making demands. And then Max starts to see the Inquisition, which should have been a force for good, doing worse and worse things simply for power. Dorian empathizes, feeling similarly about Tevinter, so perhaps they can stop the worst excesses of the organization Max “leads”... can’t they?
