It happened on Monterey Road during a September afternoon. While other mice might have been at work, or simply enjoying their day, Thea was stuck in traffic.
There was an minor accident up ahead, but it still required full rerouting, as it took place on a major highway. One that Thea needed to take to get back to the gazette.
When the road finally cleared up, she came across the scene of the accident, a street wrapped in sickly fluorescent tape, a single repeating word inscribed on its flat side. BIOHAZARD.
Thea didn’t know what it was, whether it was the plain vehicles on the scene, or the lack of authority, or simply the tape barricading the road. There was something wrong. Something that reeled her in, like bait at the end of a fishing line. It beckoned her to take another look, to come closer.
As she returned to the gazette, she couldn’t stop thinking about the accident, prompting her to go to her brother, Geronimo, to announce that she wanted to write something for the gazette about this. But this article of her’s soon devolves into an amateur investigation, one that ropes too many mice in with her at once.
This game of detective Thea plays goes on too long, getting uglier all the while. -
