Summary
Hawk’s life is in ruins. At 54, his wife Lucy has just discovered that he cheated on her with other men. Now, in the middle of a divorce, fired from the law firm still somehow run by his 85-year-old bigoted father, and effectively exiled from the life he built, he is forced to start over. When his best friend Marcus invites him to San Francisco to join his husband’s LGBTQIA+ nonprofit as a legal advisor, Hawk reluctantly says yes.
Tim has spent his entire adult life working as a social worker alongside his best friend Frankie. He has been with his boyfriend Arthur for 14 years, and everything in his world feels... settled. Predictable. Until Hawkins Fuller walks into it.
Or: The modern setting AU as a quiet nod to the 70s episode.

Summary
After losing his job at a senator’s office, Tim Laughlin becomes a cook at the house of Hawkins Fuller, his former lover whom he cannot seem to part from. Striving to hide his true preferences, Hawkins gets engaged, marries and starts a family. The only way for Tim to show Hawkins his love is through his cooking, quite like Tita does to Pedro in ‘Like Water for Chocolate’. When Hawkins goes to live abroad with his wife and his infant son, Tim flees and decides to eradicate the past to regain his sanity.
Both FT and 'Like Water for Chocolate' concentrate on love that is not meant to be and on the hardships people have to face to have their hearts' yearnings quenched. This fic is no different, but it has a happier ending than the two canon stories.
'Like Water for Chocolate' is only a small fandom on AO3, and you may not be familiar with this Mexican gem, but even if you have never read Esquivel's novel or watched the 1992 screen version, you'll still be able to read this fic without missing out on plots.

"Then—off-key but unmistakably familiar—came a voice from just outside the room.
“Happy birthday to you… Happy birthday to you…”
Tim smiled before he even turned his head.
Hawk stood in the doorway, barefoot, his sweatpants hanging low on his hips, hair a chaotic masterpiece. In his hands, carefully balanced, was a cake—a small, round thing set on a pale blue plate. It looked like something out of a dream."

Summary
And then Hawk understood Tim’s instructions. The thick smoke clouded his senses and he inhaled like Tim told him to, pointedly not focusing on the faintest brush of Tim’s bottom lip against his own.
He held the smoke in for a second or two because he felt like that’s what he was supposed to do, and then he blew it out, taking a deep breath of fresh air.
When he opened his eyes, Tim was watching him. His fingers were still sunk in Hawk’s hair. “Not bad?” he asked.
“Again?”

Summary
When Tim Laughlin was convicted and needed a place to lay low, hiding in the cabin of his ex was the only option in sight. And so, now, he is hidden in the middle of nowhere, where everything around is constantly testing his feelings and devotion.
Hawk knew from the beginning what kind of life he wanted to live. But he also knew that his wants were fantasy. And so, he did what was expected, and sliced his heart into pieces. He knew what he was doing was wrong. He knew calling his (ex) lover to hide in his cabin could be a mistake, especially when his family is near. But he didn’t care. All he knew was his boy needed him, and he could help him.
(Or an AU where Tim doesn’t go to prison or get convicted. But he doesn’t stay in the cabin either. Where Hawk opens his heart a little, shows emotions, fucks up again and again but tries every moment for his family.)

Summary
“Tell Hawk about that weird memory shit you got the flyer for.”
“The Lacuna thing?” Luke disappeared for a second, before returning with a blue flyer. He came down the stairs, handing it off to Hawk. “This research lab was putting these up around campus and handing them out. They gave me one. They say they can erase people’s memories, specific things. Specific places. Specific people.” He shrugged. “I think it’s a bunch of bullshit. Why? You want to try it? Milan not all it’s cracked up to be?”
Hawk swallowed thickly, staring at the number on the flyer. “I don’t know if I want to try it. But I think Tim already has.” He looked up. “And it’s not bullshit. It works.”
______Or, a series of moments throughout four decades in which Hawk and Tim fall together before they fall apart.

Tim’s world, as he knew it, flipped upside down the moment he found out he’d been cast as Giovanni in a film adaptation of the revered classic Giovanni’s Room. It felt like a dream come true, a sign that things were finally looking up for him and his career.
Then came the eight words that catapulted him off the axis of an already unfamiliar world:
