Summary
Everyone in the world regrets a time when they should’ve lied, yet chose not to. He’s had plenty of those moments, many more having the opposite true instead, but if he were to point to a singular moment in his life, a singular moment where he had done injustice to someone that he cared about, to someone that he loved, to family, it was not staring that man in his eyes and saying no.
It was not defending his mother, it was not spouting off about his mother’s deference, of her loyalty, of her admiration, if he could go back to any one moment in his life, and rewrite his own words, he’d have looked up at that man and said that he’d misspoke.
Moral, marvelous, meritorious, moving, mindful, mighty, there are so many ways that he could’ve misspoke. He could’ve sat there and said that he’d meant any number of other things, that he was young, that he was stupid, there are hundreds of excuses that he could’ve prattled on about.
He could’ve saved his mother.
At least he may hopefully avenge her.

New L’Manburg was beautiful during the winter. The floating lanterns that illuminated its quaint little wooden roads made all the little ice crystals that covered the whole scenery glitter. The surface of the lake that had filled in the crater Wilbur had left behind was frozen, although the clear water underneath was still visible. Schools of clown fish swam through the corals, salmon rushed by in a hurry to get upstream, cods lazily explored the extensive kelp forest down there at a relaxed pace, and glow squids offered a light spectacle like no other.
It was a pity, Tommy thought, that he didn’t have the time to take in all of that beauty.
For one thing, he was pretty sure that he wasn’t allowed back into the country he’d helped to found yet. Wanted posters with his face drawn on them were still hanging on the one bulletin board that existed in the town center. They were faded and a couple had been ripped up, but there had been no attempt to officially remove them. For another, well, he was there because he’d heard whispers of a certain event taking place on that day, and he didn’t want to miss it.

Tommy hits the floor with a thud, limbs aching in every way.
“You fell. Again.” Technoblade looks at him with an expression that Tommy can’t quite seem to place.“Life’s not so easy when you’re not immortal.” Tommy spits back, huffing and pulling himself off the ground. He feels a twinge of fear for snapping at Technoblade like that, but he quickly shatters it.
“You are mortal, yet you stand before me, refusing to give up.” Technoblade replies, tilting his head up slightly.
“You are stubborn, and certainly foolish at times.” Technoblade’s gaze seemed to hold Tommy there, as they stared into each other’s irises.
“But you have a gift that many mortals will never have.” The prince pauses, releasing his eyes from Tommy, and attaching them to the window.
“You are brave.”

Tommy collapsed to his knees, breath hitching as pain exploded through his stomach. Every inhale felt like fire crawling up his throat.Clink.
Wilbur dropped the voice changer. The tiny device hitting the floor echoed louder than any scream.
“What’s wrong, Toms? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Wilbur’s voice—his real voice—cut through the air. Too familiar. Too calm.“No. Fucking. Way…” Tommy’s voice cracked, each word strangled by agony. He tried to breathe, but the pain was a noose tightening around his ribs.
“Don’t worry,” Wilbur crouched down, eyes glinting with a twisted sort of affection. “You’re not going to die. Think of this as… an initiation. We all go through it. Isn’t that right, Techno?”
Another figure stepped into the light.
Tommy froze. His heartbeat went silent.
“Fucking Techno…” he rasped, disbelief dripping from every syllable.
Techno lifted his knife and gave a friendly little wave.
“Surprise, Tommy.”
This time, the voice came from the second voice changer—glowing red in Techno’s hand. -

Wilbur flopped onto the couch, legs stretched out as he grabbed his phone.
“You get the smaller room which is on the left there.” Wilbur pointed to a small, narrow hallway that had three doors in total. “The bathroom is across from your door. Rent’s due on the first.”
Dream raised a brow. “That’s it? No interview? No rules?”
Wilbur turned on the television in front of him with a remote. “I don’t care what you do as long as you pay your share. Just don’t touch my stuff.”
Dream considered that. No fake niceties, no over-the-top friendliness. Just two people coexisting. It was perfect.
“Alright, deal.” Dream said. “Should I come back tomorrow morning with my stuff?”
Wilbur waved him off. “Sure, sure. I’ll also give you a copy of the keys tomorrow too.”
It was almost too perfect.
He should’ve known there was a catch.
