Summary
In his senior year of high school, Troy thinks very hard about throwing the game. Comes within a hair’s breadth of doing so. But he doesn’t, in the end. He gets recruited into the NFL straight out of high school, which comes with a finality, an ending of its own.
In other words: here is how Troy Barnes picks up the pieces of his life, after it ends.

Summary
“Life must have been harsh on you for not being able to work like anyone else after all.”
Troy thinks about this last sentence a lot, even after having left the office. He always assumed the world was harsh on Abed only, and fair about him. Because Abed was the one struggling; Troy was just a lazy ex-jock who only got his stuff together after sailing away on a boat and reuniting with the love of his life, and inheriting far more than enough to be able to take his time into finding a job that actually fit his way of thinking. Now he actually thinks about it, it all makes sense. And, slowly, there’s a lump settling in the bottom of his throat as the memories go on and on and as he’s looking at them in a whole other light. The ones including his father especially.

Summary
“You’re kind of weird, you know that?” Troy says.
This prompts an actual full-mouth smile. “So I’ve been told.”
Abed looks breathtaking when he smiles like that. Troy tries not to stare. “So you’re not kidding about the Butterfly Effect, huh? You think one slight change in the past changes everything in the future.”
“Yes,” Abed answers.
Troy chuckles and sips his drink. “Man, if I could go back and change the past, that’d be awesome.” He thinks about how much could be saved if he had the opportunity to quit football much, much earlier.
“Troy, have you ever actually watched The Butterfly Effect?”
He shakes his head. “No. Is it any good?”
“No, but that doesn’t matter. The point of the movie is that the more Evan tries to alter the past to improve his future, the worse things become.”
Troy swallows dryly. “So...changing the past is not awesome?”
“No,” Abed says, looking Troy in the eye for the first time tonight. “No, it isn’t.”***
Someone has altered their timeline. Troy and Abed never met at Greendale. Troy is a miserable college athlete, and Abed is trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
