The first Harbinger to not be a Nord was an Orc woman by the name of Batul, who came to the Companions in the days of the Last Dragonborn, and did much to establish it as an institution of Hircine worship. Batul herself was likely illiterate, and left us no records of her life. However, her adoptive daughter Lucia gro-Batul was educated in the Jarl's court as accorded a Thane's child in that era. Lucia may have written "The Harbinger's Daughter" herself, using third person as was common for Cyrodiilic-language memoirs of that era. The change in person would have allowed Lucia plausible deniability in the authorship of the memoir, then seen as a weak and defective form of literature. Scholars today regard it Lucia as the probable author, since "The Harbinger's Daughter" contains many details about Batul's life corroborated by other sources, and some only a family member could have known.
Orcs believe Batul was the Dragonborn. To them, Lucia's account proves the veracity of their claim, with its description of Batul shouting the name of Kyne to soothe beasts, among other feats. For this reason, "The Last Harbinger" is an important text to scholars interested in the true identity of the Last Dragonborn.
