The real thrill this time is not what she does but what she allows; each advance of his double’s hand brings a new flare of envy, of shame at being so easily substituted. From her cheek that rival touch slides down her neck, along to her shoulder, further down to cup her breast. She arches into it, pressing into the palm until the hand moves again, this time to pull her hips towards her lover’s.
The only person that Loki has ever really envied is Thor, and that was never a sexual jealousy – only rarely did they both take an interest in the same person and Loki has long since convinced himself that any additional appeal Thor might hold to a potential lover was purely in his status as Odin’s heir.
He has certainly never had any reason to envy himself, but he and Sylvie inhabit a rather different reality now – an endless series of realities, each with another version of themselves to contend with – and there’s something rather liberating about an envy that’s so unfamiliar and so easily assuaged by Sylvie proving that she can’t be taken from him by some stranger with the same face.
