A one-shot set in my au fanfic: A Child Among the Ranks. I would read that, before trying out this fic, but the main idea is: Kaie has been captured by the Galra, and is being trained up as Zarkon's paladin. Sometimes that means brutal beatings, but today it means brutal debate.
Note: I am definitely playing around with canon here. For starters, Ladnok was there while Haggar pulled out her Naxzela plot, but I'm just gonna pretend that was a different Commander. Also, I added some onto Altean lore, because the show only ever gave us plot-convenient powers and those god damn juniberry flowers.
Remember, kids: an empire is always bad, and debating with bigots is how they get ya'.

Hunk’s hands flew to his mouth, his expression crumpling as he stumbled to a corner, retching until his stomach was empty. Shiro stood frozen, his face unreadable, masking his horror in the practiced way of a soldier, but his trembling hands gave him away. Lance’s vision blurred, his throat aching as he forced down a sob. All he wanted was to run to Keith, to cradle him, to shield him from any more pain.
He took a step forward, but Shiro grabbed his arm, his voice rough. “Lance, don’t. If we move him the wrong way...we could do more harm than good. We have to wait for the medical team. They’ll know how to stabilize him safely.” His voice, usually so steady, wavered with barely controlled emotion, and Lance’s stomach twisted in agony.

My Voltron: Legendary Defender rewrite fanfic cause what they did to that show violated the Geneva convention. You don't need to have seen the show to read this, nor will this follow the storylines of the show closely, well, ok, maybe some of them. Also just a warning, this may be slow-paced because I want to focus on the characters rather than the external conflict. It'll still have it's fair share of action sequences, but may lull at times, just a heads up for those who are expecting exciting space adventures.
