But all of that changes when his birthday is drawn for the draft live on TV, December 1st, 1969.

The next thing Steve knew, he was standing in the gym surrounded by hundreds of other students dressed like they were trying to look grown up, more balloons than he had ever seen in his life, and the scent of punch, sweat, and way too much hairspray rolled into one. The music blared so loudly he couldn’t hear his own thoughts, but one look at the expression on Soda’s face was enough to know that didn’t matter.
Steve can’t figure out if he regrets going to the prom or if it turns out to be one of the best nights he’s had in a while.
