Keith would like to speak to whoever put a clock in the room. It’s right above the bed. Ticking. Ticking. Ticking away. Counting down each second, each minute—mockingly. Up until this point, everything had felt loud. Chaos and sirens, crying children, the calls of doctors. Shiro’s voice in his ear, a steady hand on his shoulder, tethering him to reality. But now it’s quiet as Lance lays motionless on the hospital bed. His chest rises and falls, but only with the help of a ventilator. Bags paint darkly beneath his eyes; his cheeks are hollowed and his skin is drained of color. Keith had clung desperately to the steady beep of Lance’s heartbeat, but the clock had drowned it out and wrapped its monotonous hands around Keith’s throat.
