He was afraid he and Racetrack wouldn’t be able to get enough gloves and hats and scarves and boots to keep the boys warm. He was afraid he would never get away to Santa Fe and its vast, open spaces. He was afraid of the Spider. And the Refuge. And how it would break his boys if they were taken. How it was probably breaking Crutchie now.
He was afraid he would break, if the blows didn’t stop soon.
Maybe that’s why he took the deal.

Knowing it could have easily been his boyfriend lying there on the bed (or worse) turned Spot's stomach. He couldn't shake the terror that thought brought him.

Because a small part of him does want the Jets to be able to meet the people Race now considers his friends and family. He wants them to meet each other and be able to get along. He wants to be able to grab the Jets by the shoulders and shake them whilst yelling ‘we were wrong about the PRs! If we move on we’ll be better! Look how great all these guys are!’
That probably wouldn’t work though.
