Jon looks down. The sight of his disfigured hand, covered in bandages and still pulsing with leftover heat greets him. 'Um', he says, resisting the urge to pull at the detached skin that’s peeking out from underneath the cloth. 'Yeah, I’ve been. Fine.' Martin doesn’t look convinced, but he doesn’t call him out on it either. Jon, happy to take whatever he can get at the moment, calls it a victory."

People tended to disappear when alone with Peter Lukas — so that girl from the shipping vessel's statement implied — yet as heavy boots came clanging down the hallway and a polite one-two knock hit the door, John remained where he was.
