Carlos shrugs heavily. Yes, he feels much worse. He’s the worst houseguest, up in the middle of the night, scaring his boyfriend’s mom and running up her electric bill by holding the freezer open. His parents would be so disappointed. He’s actually terrible at vacations and certainly awful at spring break. “I was gonna get a popsicle,” he croaks.
In which college student Carlos Reyes visits New York with his boyfriend, gets ridiculously sick, and misses his mom.

They fought like fire and gasoline—burning everything in their path until TK walked out, slamming the door on everything they had. Carlos told himself he’d be fine. He tried to be. But fainting alone in his apartment was just the beginning. TK was gone. The world was quiet.
When Carlos finds out he’s pregnant, the joy is quiet, fragile. His tiny apartment on the third floor without a lift suddenly feels like a mountain. He talks to the babies at night, tells them stories. But the bleeding starts. And then the vomiting. The hospital calls him back. The word cancer punches through the air like glass shattering.
TK doesn’t know.
Until he does.
And when he finds Carlos again—fighting to hold on, alone, scared, and still glowing with the quiet fire of love he never stopped feeling—TK realizes it’s not too late. Not yet.
Not if he’s strong enough to carry all of them home.
