Secondly, the boy was silently staring out towards the preserve with a pensive expression. Thirdly, he had no scent, and his heartbeat was non-existent.
Okay, maybe he should have led with that, but the point was, there was a boy sitting on the bleachers, and Derek seemed to be the only one who could see him.

“Afraid so, big guy.” The demon wiggled his fingers, and Derek felt a cold shiver roll down his spine, like something inside him shifted. “See, instead of a simple ‘poof, you’re dead’ deal, you actually tethered your soul to mine. Which means if you die, I die. And frankly, I am way too pretty for that nonsense.”

Derek was sprawled at the kitchen counter, flipping through the sports section of the newspaper, Then his phone buzzed, rattling against the slick white marble countertop, snapping him out of his daze. He glanced at the screen—unknown number. With a shrug, he swiped to answer.
“Hello?” Derek said, his voice a little rough from not talking to anyone yet that morning.
“Mr. Hale?” came a voice he didn’t recognize, crisp and professional but unfamiliar.
“Speaking…” Derek replied.
“Hi, Mr. Hale, this is Bitsie—I’m the assistant to the principal at Eli’s school. We were wondering if you could swing by for a meeting with Principal Stilinski at 10 a.m. today. Any chance you can make it that soon?”
“Yeah, I can be there by then,” Derek said, glancing at the clock—it was just past 8:30, so he’d have to hustle. “But, uh, what’s this about?” He fished for a hint, anything to clue him in on why they were dragging him in out of the blue.
“Oh, it’s better if you just chat with Mr. Stilinski directly—he’ll fill you in on everything. See you soon!”
Derek pulled the phone away from his ear, staring at it for a second like it might explain itself.
