“A week,” Colin repeats, stunned. It hadn’t really occurred to him before to wonder how these various and sundry suitors had arrived to the Dairy Isles in the first place. “You sailed for a week just for the opportunity to marry some guy you’d never met?”
Deli laughs. “When word reached Carn that the tyrant of the Dairy Isles had fallen, and his son had ascended to the throne and was seeking a partner, I admit I was curious. Carn had extended a hand to the Dairy Isles once in the past and been rudely rejected. King Basha was suspicious that this was a ruse, but my mother encouraged me to come and find out.”
“So you weren’t even coming as a suitor?” Colin asks, beginning to feel embarrassed. “You were coming to find out about me. If I was going to be a tyrant like my dad.”
“It was a question I sought to answer,” Deli admits freely. “But the moment I arrived to the Dairy Isles, it was clear you would not rule like your father. The atmosphere of the people was different. Hopeful. By the time I met you in the throne room, I was as much a suitor as anyone.”
