The words were a match thrown on a gasoline fire, not because they were an insult, but because they were a confession. Endo wasn't just observing Sakura; he was captivated. Takiishi, in his own convoluted way, heard the subtext: I'm bored with your complexity. I'm fascinated by his simplicity. Takiishi’s composure snapped. He didn't think, he didn't hesitate. His hand shot out, a vicious open-handed slap that cracked against Endo’s face with a sickening thud. The force of it whipped Endo's head to the side. A fresh, hot line of pain erupted on his lip where Takiishi’s knuckles had caught an old wound, and he tasted blood as it welled up and trickled down his chin.

They both knew losing almost half of the crop was going to make life in the colony difficult for everyone for a few months. All they could do was to do their best to survive over the winter and try to get a bigger yield next year with better knowledge of the fall’s colder weather patterns. Until then, it was Xeno’s and his job to lead the people so they wouldn’t start rebelling, but unfortunately it looked like the task was starting to stress them already.
Now that he saw the frustration on their leader’s tired face, Stanley started to have a hunch as to why he had been asked to pay a visit.
