Summary
Joonghuk and Dokja live in a medieval village that offers a yearly sacrifice to their god to ensure a bountiful harvest and ward off disease. At twelve years old, it’s their last year of being eligible for sacrifice. Joonghuk assures Dokja that he won’t be chosen but upon the morning of the Choosing, a red lily with Dokja’s name is painted on the door—the sign of the god’s choice.
Dokja accepts his fate, as it means Joonghyuk will another year in good health, however Joonghyuk will not stand to have his star taken away from him.
