Clearly, the offline yellow frame trapped by blackened earth had been trying to get clear even before the final explosion, likely ferrying his charge to safety. Small organic fingers tugged and shoved at the comparatively massive rocks, delicate skin tearing and leaving behind streaks of red fluid. But despite his panic, despite the pain, the human refused to abandon his guardian.
“Bumblebee,” he choked out, voice thick with emotion.
It reminded Soundwave all too much of another scene, long before, on another planet entirely.

Thundercracker thought he had it rough already, what's with being a war orphan and having to raise two kid brothers on his own while juggling with various tasks as a Decepticon soldier. Well, he's just a Cadet, and not quite of age for even that, but he's still a Decepticon, like his Creators were!
Starscream and Skywarp, little terrors that they are, aren't always making life easy for him, but Thundercracker is determinated to protect and take care of them, no matter what. It's not like any member of their extended family tried to get custody or help them, after all, so he's quite aware they are on their own.
The roughness, sadly, seems to only have started when their supply ship finally run out of luck, and straight into Autobots' path...

Or, Ratchet is a grumpy mech, a good medic, and a panicked wreck the moment Raf starts sneezing. Okay, perhaps not a panicked wreck, but his mother-hen tendencies are truly showing...

Summary
Optimus and his team are in trouble.
They have accidentally/not so accidentally destroyed the Allspark, and the Elite Guard is on their way. Sure, it was to keep the artefact out of Decepticons' hands, but their bosses might be (rightfully) pissed at them. And when Ultra Magnus is angry, you better watch out for that hammer.
So, what's a Prime to do to protect his own in this case?
Well, perhaps use his own righteous fury as well as his encyclopedical knowledge of the Autobots' laws to deflect the blame and dazzle his Superiors before they even have a chance to ask where the Allspark is.
It's not even as if it would be unwarranted. After all, Optimus should have been on maternity leave for ages, not dealing with this slag!

“What Jazz means is,” Ratchet butted in with bared dental plates, “is that you totally should authorize the formation of a special commando team to infiltrate that soggy piece of slag they call a ship and cut off Megatron’s spike!”
Optimus didn’t roll his optics, but it was a near thing. “Oh please, not THAT again!” he exclaimed, throwing his arms into the air. “For the last time, Megatron doesn’t have ‘wicked designs’ on me,” he kept his voice steady as he said so, even if his Spark gave a little pang “ and I already said the permission was denied, and it’s final!”
Or, a meeting like any other for the Autobot's Leader and his Officers. If only they could stop asking for Megatron's spike on a plate, though; it'd made Optimus' day a lot less stressful.
