Hermione Granger wanted one thing: to get her parents’ memories back. She’s finally got Ministry support to go to Australia and attempt it - if successful, she might even be able to help patients living in St Mungo’s Janus Thickey Ward. She’s leaving London for 3 months, years after dumping Ron when he proved he was the worst Weasley by far. She’s still the neurotic, frustrated witch she’s always been, but now she’s made friends with a couple of Slytherins and gotten some (slightly) better dress sense.
Draco Malfoy has been working for MACUSA since 1998, after being sentenced to a mandatory year of employment with them following his trial. Becoming well-known by his colleagues as an expert in ‘cross-cultural cases’, he’s now much more familiar with life in the Muggle world and a trusted expert at avoiding breaches of the Statute of Secrecy. He’s also worked pretty hard to not be the massive wanker (and failed Death Eater) he was at Hogwarts - while still being the Lord of Malfoy Manor (albeit from afar).
When the Minister decides the Golden Girl needs a guard dog, they call in the best.
A tiny house in Bondi Junction, Sydney? Nothing, at all, could possibly go wrong. It would definitely be fine.

He had her pinned to the brick wall of an alleyway. She moved beneath him, trying to break free, but his fingers were wrapped too tightly around her arms.
"I thought you said you never wanted to see me again?" Hermione huffed, feeling both defeated and bemused.
"And I thought you said you would stay the hell away from Death Eaters" Draco hissed.
How could he possibly know that? Hermione's eyes narrowed, "are you a part of this?" When Draco's mask remained unmoved she leaned in closer to him. "If you think you can keep a story this big covered up, you've got another thing coming. Don't think I'll back down just because of our history." His scent filled her senses for the first time in weeks. It took everything in her to hold her resolve.
His glacial eyes never broke from hers.
"You're being followed. Don't say I didn't warn you." He released her from his grip and tore off down the alley without so much as a backwards glance.
Hermione watched him go, calculating her next move.
