Alex turns, sees them, and makes his way over with a friendly smile that nearly sends Henry into cardiac arrest.
Bea greets him brightly — in the worst Spanish Henry has ever heard.
“¡Hola, camarero guapo! Tenemos… uh… cumpleaños? Aquí. ¿Tú… quieres… vino?”
Her accent is a massacre of vowels and misplaced confidence. Henry’s knowledge of Spanish is so limited it’s practically non-existent, but he’s pretty sure the H is supposed to be silent.
Alex stares at her for a beat, then laughs — a rich, warm sound that sends Henry’s soul directly into the floor.
“Wow,” Alex says, in absolutely perfect English. “That won’t be necessary. I’m from Texas.”
Henry wants to die.
