"There’s this voice that Marina uses when Pearl’s in trouble. It’s similar to her normal voice, sing-songy, but with an edge that only Pearl can pick up on. Pearl calls it the Voice of Doom, and it never fails to put her in her place, usually in the middle of a conversation when she was getting a little uppity. Pearl’s been called a lot of things—obstinate, hard-headed, loud-mouthed—but she knows her shit and knows what the hell she’s talking about most of the time, so when anyone pushes her she pushes back. The thing is, Marina had been on her very best behavior so far. Despite the fact that there is no written guide to being in unrequited love with your best friend, Marina was doing a very good job of it — reciprocating affection in exactly mirrored amounts and never escalating, never lingering on inappropriate thoughts— it took years of practice and terror, but she taught herself how to love Pearl like a friend and keep everything else locked away inside.
