Summary
Jaune Arc is just a civilian aboard the Space Colony Vale, hanging over the planet Remnant.
An attack on the colony, however, shackles Jaune to a prototype 'hunter' weapon, a massive humanoid machine known as the 'Crocea Mors'. Now the human companion to an AI named Pyrrha, and an accidental pilot, he comes to realize that, whether he likes it or not, he might just be the key to saving human and faunus both from the hostile alien force known as the Grimm.

The Blacksmith, in all fairness, did tell them exactly what was about to happen. The problem, really, is that when five heretofore unknown figures suddenly blip into existence a good decade and a half into the past, a lot of very powerful people notice.
And many of them are less than pleased.
Or: Those five from the Ever After, Jaune Arc, Blake Belladonna, Yang Xiao-Long, Weiss Schnee, and Ruby Rose, do not end up in Vacuo. Instead, they end up scattered across Remnant, 12 years in the past.
