Summary
"Your beard obstructs too much of your mouth" is not polite to tell a dwarf, nor does Legolas wish to explain why he needs to see Gimli's mouth to know what he says.
Gimli, meanwhile, spends the first part of their journey together ignoring the elf out of indignation.
This all changes with an explanation and a belated answer to what Gimli had attempted to ask before they set out. From there on, they are friends. Or, in the words of Aragorn:
"I would have an easier time separating Gimli from his axe than I would separating him from you. And you know that he does not relinquish his axe so easily."

Summary
The Hero isn't very good, and the Villian isn't very bad, the chosen one and the savior aren't prepared to save anyone.
Tom Riddle doesn't want to kill children, he wants to protect them, at all costs. So he arranged for Lord Voldemort to die and resurfaces as Lord Thomas Peverell. Lord Peverell enters the Wizengamot and campaigns against child abuse. When he finds out that Harry Potter was being abused by his relatives he takes the boy in. To manipulate him and destroy Dumbledore, of course. When Dumbledore sends an unprepared Neville Longbottom to rescue the "kidnapped" Potter boy...well, Thomas Peverell is a Dark Lord, and dark lords are very, very evil.
