Lately, Merchants have taken to flirting with unwitting Seam folk as a joke, sometimes going so far as to ask them out on a date. I've even heard of a couple instances of a Merchant asking someone from the Seam to marry them, and then laughing hysterically when the poor recipient says 'yes'. So, when Peeta Mellark approaches me after the reaping, red with nerves and pushing his lips together as if he's trying very hard not to do something like laugh, I'm immediately wary.
Peeta can't possibly be asking me to marry him for real.
    ... right?

“Who are you?” The man carrying the newspaper asked her, scrunching up his brow. He looked her up and down, completely befuddled. One by one, the other man, the doctor, and the stormy woman turned to look at her. They wore almost identical expressions of confusion. Rey blinked, speechlessly. The appropriate answer was "a waitress", or "a stranger," or even "a crazy, perpetually single woman who’s been hopelessly, inexplicably in love with your comatose son for weeks."

Behind her, the nurse huffed, cocking her hip. As if it was obvious, she said, “She’s his fiancée.”

“I deal with the brain, illnesses of the brain such as yours and I’ve compared your prior brain trauma to other injuries, other similar brain trauma to try and understand the later cause and effect to the brain. I’ve been studying memory loss in brain trauma patients, that was why I asked you all those questions yesterday because I’ve found a link.”

“You think my memory is failing me?” I ask.

He nods merely. “I’m sorry Peeta. You’re already experiencing it now.”

When Peeta is diagnosed with Alzheimer's he tries to hang on to his sense of self for as long as he can.
