Summary
On the 22nd day of the final calendar month in the year 1488, a silent child is born.
A mother holds her soft-skinned newborn with calloused hands. A father presses a simple kiss to a small head. A sister curls her fingers around the gentlest hand she's ever held.
They know him as a baby and a brother.
But as his voice warbles out for a siren's first choral cry, they do not hear the melodious babble they expect—instead, what rises from his tiny, tender chest is, as the Elders later tell them, the piercing cry of war.
How lucky this unremarkable family is, the Elders muse, to be the first to hearken the moon's holy son.
OR: Gillion is a siren rather than a triton. In some respects, this changes very little. In other ways, it changes everything.

Summary
“‘Is there any part of your life you can tell me?” Chip says it half like a joke, smile tugging at his mouth. But he’s looking at Gillion now and he is the same visage as before. Baggy cloths hanging of his brown skin. The world appears dark in comparison to him, like white noise. Where he stands things distorts into rivets like they’re in a heatwave. The hard lines of railing turning to putty around him.
When his eyes lock on to the railing it snaps back in place like it’s always been.
He’s beautiful and warm and light plays on his skin differently, moving in patterns like they’re underwater. There is a distance part of Chip, a million miles away that tell him that this man is danger. That he is a silver edged blade hidden away in layers of cotton and leather.
Gillion is the expanse of the ocean stretched out for acres, that extends far past what he can hope to visualize. An embrace he wants to fall into a thousand times over.
“Uh. hm. Y– no, no probably not” Gillion says.
Or at a college party Chip meets gillion doing a terrible job of being a human
