Summary
It was as though Ennis had been a framed picture hanging at a tilt his whole life, and Jack had walked by, tilted his head, and with a single nudge, set him straight. Jack had shown him an entirely different image, one that challenged everything Ennis thought he knew about himself and the world he lived in.
Suddenly, life as Ennis had pictured it, Alma at the end of the aisle in her white veil, eyes soft and hands folded, everything neat and proper and expected, seemed like it belonged to another man’s story. It wasn’t the life he was meant to lead. It wasn’t what he was meant to see when he closed his eyes at night and dreamed of the future.

His eyes locked onto a particularly bright swath of stars, and he let curiosity chip away at his usual stern nature. "Which one's the, uh… Big Dipper or whatever?" he asked, clearing his throat as though the question tasted strange in his mouth. The words came out slightly strained, as if shy about being said out loud.
Jack turned his head, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. The glow from the campfire picked up flecks of mischief in his eyes. "The Big Dipper?" he echoed with exaggerated disbelief. "Now you're just makin' up shit, Ennis."
"I ain't makin' up shit," Ennis grumbled defensively. "Unlike your sorry ass, always goin' on about your rodeos and whatnot." He lifted his hand and jabbed a rough finger at a random cluster of stars. Truth be told, he couldn't be certain which group of lights belonged to which constellation, hell, he only recalled bits and pieces from old stories, "It's that one, ain't it?"
"Dumb as a box of rocks, you," Jack managed through fits of laughter, shoulders shaking as he tried to catch his breath. "Don't you know nothin'?" The words might have stung if not for the way Jack's eyes crinkled at the corners, genuine warmth shining through.

For four years, Ennis had thought about this moment in a thousand different ways. He’d played it out in his mind while trying to fall asleep, while fixing fences at work, while pretending to listen to Alma’s endless chatter about groceries and bills. Each time, he told himself he’d have something to say if this day ever came, words that might capture the emptiness he’d felt or the way his mind always drifted back to the mountain air of Brokeback. He’d wanted to say it all: how he’d missed Jack’s laugh, the crinkle of his eyes when he grinned, and the way he carried himself.
But now, the real man was standing right in front of him, all flesh and bone and memories. And every practiced speech Ennis had spun in his head vanished like smoke on the wind. Instead, he stood there, mouth half-open, throat tight, pulse banging away so loud he could hardly hear himself think.
The only words he could manage, two parts disbelief, one part relief, came out in a ragged gasp: “Jack fuckin’ Twist!”

Ennis leaned back against the log behind him, his posture more relaxed now, like the weight of the day was slowly melting off his shoulders. The firelight painted his face in amber and shadow, highlighting the faint lines of weariness around his eyes. He tilted his head toward the sky, just enough to reveal the faintest curve of his profile.
Jack followed his gaze, letting his eyes drift upward to the stars that spilled across the dark Wyoming sky. They hung so low it felt like you could reach up and pluck one, and Jack found himself wondering, not for the first time, how a place so vast and empty could feel so crowded when Ennis was near.
