Perhaps it's some misguided sense of heroism, his lifelong inability to just let things be when there's something- anything- he can do about it. Perhaps it's reckless stupidity brought on by yet another shift of doing anything but saving lives.
Whatever it is, he leans into it fully, and slips into the freezing depths.
