    Summary

The royal family of Antarctic empire isn’t exactly close.

Emperor Philza is always occupied; Tommy hasn’t seen Techno in months, and even if Wilbur is here, their relationship can be described to be strained at best.

The royal family doesn’t need to be close, however, it only needs to be balanced, like the pillars holding the country above their heads – as long as they are strong and steady, the Empire will be too. It’s the principle that held Tommy’s back straight and his shoulders broad through the years of hardships and trials of errors; through yet another formal meeting where his father’s gaze would look past him and where his brother’s words would be filled with poison that makes the deepest parts of his soul ache.

At that time, Tommy couldn't know that his family would find a replacement for him in the face of a commoner boy named Ranboo.

    ~🦋~

Tommy's family has replaced him. It's only fair that he gets to do the same.

“What happened yesterday,” he starts, curling his fists into grass, words like strings dragged inch by inch out of a tight loop in his chest, “I–”

He never gets to know if he could truly muster up the courage, or the foolishness. Wilbur’s arms wrap around him so fast he drops the bread. Tommy blinks over his brother’s shoulder, realizing with a beat of a delay that this is a hug.

“You have nothing to apologize for,” Wilbur says softly, “I know it wasn't you.”

Those words are delivered with the same tenderness that all of Wilbur’s most fatal blows. There is blood caked under Tommy’s fingernails and horror has awakened beneath his skin all for Wilbur and Fundy’s sake and the voice inside his head rings the alarm bells, hey, stop, this cannot be right–

It’s said like he should feel like there he did something demanding forgiveness–

Relief floods his veins, a cooling salve for his heart, Wilbur doesn’t hate him Wilbur forgives him Wilbur loves–

But it was me, he thinks as he fights against his body’s instinct to lean into the contact, and bears a devastating loss. With soot and cinnamon blurring his mind somehow a thought flashes through that Dream’s response would have been different. He would say that Tommy acted out of the urge to protect his family, and there is no shame in that–

Steel settles at the bottom of his stomach. Tommy hugs his brother back, parts of him torn apart by it and instantly sewn together with basting stitches.

“Let us not speak of it again,” Wilbur murmurs. If he had told Tommy at that moment to stab his own heart with a knife, his answer would still have been yes.

    Summary

"Eyes that last I saw in tears
    Through division
    Here in death's dream kingdom
    The golden vision reappears
I see the eyes but not the tears
    This is my affliction.
    ...
    Where, as in this
The eyes outlast a little while
A little while outlast the tears
    And hold us in derision."
-T.S. Eliot, "Eyes That Last I Saw In Tears"

    ----------------------------------

It starts with the ruining of Tommy. (Coincidentally, this is also the death of Dream.)

Somehow, it ends with the healing.

It's funny, because ever since he was a kid, he'd always thought his dad had bigger and sadder puppy dog eyes than him or either of his brothers, and they're in full use now, glimmering in the warm fire light of the nether.

He looks like he's about to cry, and Tommy just wishes that he could've been gone before Phil ever got there. Before Phil had to see it. Before Phil could stop him.

Luffy grins and pushes his shoulder against yours. You feel him gently place your fallen earbud back on, the wire re-connecting the two of you to the soft tune. His hand lingers near your face, his thumb brushing against your cheekbone gently. There’s a look in his eyes, a look so soft and so gentle that it nearly makes you question all of this. A look so soft, almost akin to yearning. Or maybe it is a look of yearning.

“It’ll be the best date you’ll ever go on.” He murmurs softly.

A loud exhale and Luffy runs his hands through his hair. “I thought-” He pauses. “I thought I had made it clear, I thought I was obvious.”

You cock your head, tilting it in confusion. “Made what clear?”

Now he tugs at the black strands, like he was going insane. “I thought I made it clear that I like you. I thought it was clear that I want you. I want to be the one who takes you out on dates, who holds your hands. I want to be the one that kisses you and the one who’s taking you back home late at night. I thought I made it clear I want to be yours, that I am yours.”

"I can admit people are attractive without being in love with them. Yeah, Sanji is attractive. So is Luffy. And so are Nami and Robin. See? It's not hard. Hell, you've said I'm attractive myself, that doesn't mean you're in love with me or anything."

He tightened the grip on the hilt of his swords, his brow furrowed even further, something that seemed almost impossible, and yet, he managed. He looked like a coil tightened to its limit.

    "Except I am."

"Why did you wait until now to tell me any of this?"

"I...guess" he chewed on his words awkwardly, you had never seen him so insecure about anything, ever, it was an uncanny sight, "I might have taken you for granted, before you started hanging out with... With Sanji, you were always with me, and I didn't stop to notice it was a choice you actually made every day of your life, until you stopped."

"A father would never send his child to a war without a clear path of victory," Dragon said, whispering close to Sabo's ears as if it was an apology itself. "Had I truly considered you as my son, you would never be here in my arms right now."

Or, Dragon has mixed feelings when Sabo accidentally called him 'Dad'

“You're getting quite sappy,” Dragon chided, shaking his head.

It earned a laugh from Sabo, easing the tension on his shoulders. “Your fault. I mean, in all accounts, Luffy adopted me as his older brother. Then I met the old geezer one time and he gave me a Fist of Love.”

“He gave you a beating? That's the equivalent of signing the adoption papers.”

Sabo rewarded him with a grin, as if proud for what it entailed.
