“I’m gonna come in!” Luffy calls back. “Are you gonna get the door?”
“No,” Ace answers hotly. He’s near snarling, to be followed up with a tell-off, a barked order, an insult, except it’s all outdone by action, Luffy’s pistol fist bashing through the makeshift wooden walls. Ace curses and sits up.
Flopping his zany, jointless arm around, Luffy yanks the lock, right where he knew it would be. Then he slams the door open with his bright, searching eyes and face-splitting grin. “Ace! Happy birthday!”
And there’s his scent, dirty and tangy and sunny– it’s off-putting, too much. At 13, Luffy is rank with alpha puberty. Not terribly unlike Ace himself, he imagines, which always makes him wonder how the hell Luffy stands it. He doesn’t just tolerate it, he follows it.

Ace realizes he said something weird. Sabo can see it on his face, but he gets over it quickly and pretends he never said anything at all. Figures. At the same time, he must know that Sabo tucked that piece of information away.
