So, when Alex calls in the middle of the night, explaining he's messed up and lied to his family, Reggie agrees to fake-date him for seven-ish months and be his date to his sister's wedding. Like, what could go wrong? It's not like they're going to fall in love or anything by the end of it.

    "The first time it happens, Luke’s six and he cries. There’s a flower curling along his skin, down his left arm. That alone does not make him cry, the pain accompanying it does. The skin throbs beneath the lines and Luke didn’t do anything. He didn’t! He tries to rub at the skin, at the green and purple colours stretching over his skin, because his mom will think that he painted his arm again and then he’ll get shouted at and he’ll have to sit in the tub with his mom rubbing too hard at the paint with the hard sponge.

    But it doesn’t go away."
