“Yes. It’s a present,” she lowers her voice, like it’s a secret and to her it probably is. Fiona has never met Carrie’s mom. But Mr. Wilson’s answer to the question has simply been, that she isn’t in the picture and didn’t care to be. The picture shows a little girl in pink and blonde hair, holding onto a man’s hand with equally blond hair, blue pants and a pink t-shirt. The more or less stick figures are smiling, standing next to a house, flowers blooming around them. It’s a very nice picture. The only thought that bothers Fiona, is that she knows Mr. Wilson and that man does not have blond hair.
“I’m sure your dad will be very happy,” she says nevertheless, which makes Carrie frown.
“It’s not for daddy,” Carrie says, tongue poking out as she draws a golden sun into the corner of the picture.
Or, five times Carrie's teacher somewhat meets at least one of Bobby's boyfriends and gets confused a lot, and one time she meets all of them.

Mom catches him after sundown, copper bowls laden with candles and fruit and herbs clutched to his chest and steers him back inside the house with a firm hand on his shoulder. She doesn’t yell and she doesn’t lecture and Bobby asks her, “How did you know?”
“Because,” she tells him, putting away the bowls, “death is also lonely.” She turns to face him, draped into the sunset colors slipping in through the window, her eyes dark and strong, and says, “You need to learn to put things to rest.”
